Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Prejudice and Discrimination PSA”

In this activity, students will discuss and analyze instances of prejudice and discrimination in the novel and create a campaign to bring awareness to one of the issues.

Many characters in the novel experience some form of prejudice and discrimination. Prejudice is when someone has a negative opinion about a group of people that is not based on facts or evidence. Discrimination is when someone acts on that opinion, which could be violent or non-violent.

Focus on the experiences of one of these characters and identify occasions when they face prejudice or discrimination based on their identity.

  • In your group, choose one character to analyze. Find specific examples in the text where that character faced prejudice or discrimination.
  • Consider the character’s physical appearance, cultural background, personality traits, and actions. Write down your observations.
  • Create a public service announcement poster to bring awareness to the prejudice and discrimination that the character faces. On the poster, share information about the issue and encourage others to challenge it.

Present your poster to the class. In your presentation, describe the issue that your character faced and what someone could do to help.
