1. Lyddie orders her family members to slowly ascend the ladder to the second floor, and she maintains eye contact with the bear until she can climb up herself. The bear gets his head stuck in the boiling cauldron of porridge and runs out of the house with it on his head. (Chapter 1)

2. Lyddie argues that she and Charlie are responsible for the birth of the calf. Lyddie is tired of surrendering everything to her mother and working hard while her mother does nothing to help their family, especially because her mother will now be forcing them to work without pay while she takes the proceeds of their labors.
