Violet Sorrengail is the series’ protagonist, who can be physically identified by her unique brunette hair that fades to silver at its ends. Violet is small in stature, born with a physical condition that causes chronic pain, easily torn ligaments, and fragile joints prone to dislocation. Violet can wield lightning and slow time when she first bonds to her dragons, Tairn and Andarna. However, when Andarna grows out of her adolescence, the ability to alter time recedes. It isn’t until the later half of Onyx Storm that Violet learns she’s unknowingly manifested a matured signet from Andarna—dream-walking. This signet is extremely powerful, even more so than lightning, because Violet can walk through and meddle in people’s dreams—where they are most vulnerable and cannot have their mental shields up. This revelation about her abilities reframes much of Violet’s past and forces her to reckon with how little she truly understands about her own nature, deepening her internal conflicts. Violet’s strength has always been in her scribe-training, instilled in her by her father since childhood. This strength is what allows her to survive the events of the previous novels and continues to serve her in Onyx Storm and the war with the venin.
